‘Gmajna’ is a Slovenian word denoting mark, i.e. land held in common by a community, or such a community. Gmajna is also the name of a Slovenian village with an ageing population struggling to cope with the radically changing post-Socialist world, one dramatically different from the world of their Yugoslav youth. The poetic work of cinematic historiography features intimate accounts by seniors who use the basic metaphors of Slovenian history to ruminate not only on Slovenian land or state, but above all on the personal stories they have lived out on the common land of their own histories.

Director’s statement:
As a cinematic work of poetic historiography, Gmajna explores history in a unique manner intrinsic to the medium of motion pictures and the factual capacities of its record-keeping practice. Most importantly, it allows the audience to get to know some extraordinary personalities, thus achieving its primary purpose.
